President’s Update Spring 2025

Published March 6th, 2025 in President's Corner

Dear Umpqua Watersheds Community,
In challenging times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed.
The onslaught of executive orders aimed at
weakening environmental protections, the
disregard for science-based policy, and the attacks
on public employees and organizations committed
to diversity, equity, and inclusion make it clear that
the road ahead will not be easy. But we are not
alone in this fight. Across our region and beyond,
people are standing up for clean water, healthy
forests, and a just and inclusive society.
History has shown that resilience is built in the face
of adversity. The work we do—whether advocating

for stronger protections, restoring vital habitats, or
supporting community-led conservation—matters
now more than ever. And despite the challenges,
progress is still being made. Local and national
efforts continue to protect old-growth forests,
safeguard public lands, and ensure that future
generations inherit a planet worth cherishing.
Hope is not passive; it is an active choice. It is
found in the dedicated volunteers who contribute
to our radio station, the students learning about
ecosystems from our AmeriCorps Service Member,
and the communities coming together to make
their voices heard at the steps of the courthouse.
We at Umpqua Watersheds remain committed to
this work, knowing that every action, no matter how
small, contributes to a greater movement. Umpqua
Watersheds will remain steadfast in its
commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We
will not betray the decades of progress of those
who came before us and sacrificed in the fight
against hate, bigotry, and injustice. We know we
are on the right side of history, and we will continue
to strive to create a healthier planet for all.
Let’s stand firm in our mission, lift each other up,
and keep pushing forward. The challenges may be
great, but so is our determination. Together, we will
continue to protect, restore, and inspire.
In
solidarity
and hope,
Janice
