Seeking expert bill writer, preparing wilderness characteristics booklet
By Diana Pace
The Crater Lake Wilderness Proposal team has been implementing guidance from experts such as Dave Stone, Andy Kerr, the Umpqua National Forest supervisor and the Wilderness Society. We have a strategic plan and are prioritizing our objectives. We are working with the UW Grant Committee to seek funding so we can hire an expert to write the Crater Lake Wilderness Proposal Bill. We are removing some small sites that are dispersed and in roaded areas. We want to emphasize wilderness
characteristics, geology, plants and species. Defining “wilderness” Wilderness characteristics are as defined by the forest service: Affected primarily by the forces of nature. Outstanding opportunities for solitude or a primitive unconfined type of recreation. Size of at least 5000 acres or of sufficient size to make practicable its preservation and use in an unimpaired condition. Ecological, Geological or other features of scientific, educational, scenic or historic value. What’s next for the Wilderness Committee We will be preparing a booklet of some of our favorite sites with the best wilderness characteristics that will go with the bill. We will need volunteers to adopt a site. Some of this information is in the files due to past dedicated research teams but will be updated. Seeking expert bill writer, preparing wilderness characteristics booklet Editor’s note: This article was erroneously left out of our print and initial digital edition upload. We apologize for the inconvenience. We will be updating the map and brochure. We will continue with slide show presentations.
