New Opportunities

Published January 12th, 2021 in Education-AmeriCorps

Our AmeriCorps member has been cooking up some appetizing  opportunities for everyone in your family:

Living Downstream

Umpqua Watersheds is airing a new program on our KQUA station starting Saturday, January 16th! Tune in each Saturday at 9am or Sunday at 6pm (Pacific Time) to explore a myriad of environmentally-related topics; each episode will focus on a different theme. You can access the livestream via our KQUA website.

Changemakers

Do you know a child who wants to change the world for the better? Changemakers is a club for kids aged 9-12 years old. Each week, we’ll meet via Zoom to try prompts and activities from the book Do Something: A Handbook for Young Activists, which will be provided. Participants will have an opportunity to share their ideas of ways to solve local environmental issues during our Eco Innovations Challenge in April. The group meets Sundays at 5pm from January 17th to May 2nd (except for Valentine’s Day).

Weekend of Service

Mark April 24th & 25th in your calendars! Umpqua Watersheds will be leading a weekend of service, including our annual River Clean-Up (postponed due to COVID, but still in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.) and new Eco Innovation Challenge. Let’s celebrate Earth Day by solving some local environmental challenges!

Turning Over a New Leaf

This month, our book club for adults will focus on the theme “New Year, New Start: Taking Action” by reading and discussing Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. The group will meet on Saturday, January 30th at 6pm (Pacific Time).

In the Works

We are also working on bringing a Radio Club (for youths aged 13-18). If your teen enjoys music, theater, poetry, and/or technology, this might be a good fit for them!

Email our AmeriCorps member (who’s serving in the role of Environmental Education & Outreach Leader) to sign up or get more information on any/all of these great opportunities! Her email is ryan@umpquawatersheds.org.
