Outreach Update
By Kasey Hovik
On February 15th, Umpqua Watersheds held its annual Snowshoe Hike at Crater Lake National Park. Unlike recent years, there was plenty of snow! In fact, there was over 4 feet of snow, and the road leading to Rim Village was closed, so we hiked from the Park Headquarters. What an amazing time! The ranger-led hike lasted about 90 minutes, and we learned about the history of Mount Mazama and how Crater Lake became Oregon’s only National Park. The Ranger told us how early visitors took Model T Fords up dirt roads in reverse to reach the rim! We had a delightful group. Great questions, fun, laughter, and amazement were abundant.
As mentioned in other articles, two major projects designed to support the Umpqua Watersheds Outreach program celebrated major milestones this past month. Soon we will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Umpqua Outback and the launch of KQUA FM, our full-power noncommercial education (NCE) radio station. Both projects will have a significant impact not only for Umpqua Watersheds but as an important resource for our community.
Upcoming Events
- Earth Day Celebration: In collaboration with the Douglas County Global Warming Coalition, we’re organizing an Earth Day event on Main Street and at the Umpqua Outback on Saturday, April 19th. Details will be announced soon.
- 30th Anniversary Banquet: Mark your calendars for June 29th, our Annual Membership Banquet, where we’ll celebrate Umpqua Watersheds’ 30th anniversary. This special program will reflect on our accomplishments as a leading environmental conservation organization in the Pacific Northwest.
We extend our gratitude to our staff, volunteers, members, and supporters for their unwavering dedication, which has been instrumental in our recent successes.
