Honoring the Life of Emily Hopfer

Published December 15th, 2024 in In Memoriam, News

Pictures of nature’s beauty are awe-inspiring—a wonder to behold. But for many of us, simply admiring them is not enough. We feel called to venture out, to experience the wild in all its splendor firsthand. That call, the lure of the unknown, draws us into the elements, seeking moments of exhilaration when nature captures our hearts and minds with its breathtaking power.

With that adventure comes risk—a reality we accept to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the natural world. For some, the risk itself adds to the experience, making it all the more profound. Yet, nature, with all its majesty, is also unpredictable and unforgiving.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of one of our own. Local resident, teacher, and member of our Wilderness Committee, Emily Hopfer, passed away in a waterfall accident while pursuing her love for the outdoors. Emily’s passion for exploration and her contributions to Umpqua Watersheds were invaluable, and her absence will be deeply felt by our community.

This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder that nature’s power is both awe-inspiring and perilous. As we grieve the loss of a cherished friend and colleague, let us honor Emily’s adventurous spirit by continuing to care for and respect the wilderness she loved so deeply.
