River Clean-Up (Starting at 10am)

We will be holding a COVID-conscious clean-up at various locations in and around Roseburg (in the Umpqua watershed/Douglas County, Oregon). Participants will sign up in family groups or with others with whom you already come into regular contact, and each group will be assigned a particular location. An additional component of this event is the kick-off of a river monitoring project. Each group will be given a water quality monitoring test kit to collect data about the water quality at their clean-up site. Note: We are asking for each group to have a “Team/Site Leader” – this is the main contact for the group, and the individual responsible for picking up the materials the day of the event and returning the water quality monitoring test kits afterward; as well as a “Photographer” – someone to take pictures of the group’s litter clean-up efforts and email them to Umpqua Watersheds (ryan@umpquawatersheds.org).
Date & Time: Saturday, April 24th, 2021 (10am to 2pm)
Meeting Location: Staggered material pick-up between 10 & 11am at Stewart Park (playground entrance)
What’s Provided/Included for Each Group: Garbage bags, gloves, trash pickers, sharps/hazard container, gift certificate to local restaurant, map of sites and pick-up locations, COVID expectations and safety tips, water quality monitoring test kit and data sheet, information about river monitoring program and upcoming volunteer training, plus raffle entries (one for each participant)
What to Bring: Masks are required when picking up materials at Stewart Park. We recommend that all participants bring a lunch and reusable water bottle, and wear comfortable/sturdy close-toed shoes/boots.
Parking: Free
Bathrooms: There are public restrooms available at Stewart Park; there may or may not be restrooms available at all clean-up sites.
Accessibility/Physical Requirements: Participants may need to cover rough/uneven terrain at their site, and be able to bend, squat, and utilize hands or a trash-picker device to retrieve litter.
